How to Help:

      1. Donating Books to the Library Project

          2. How to Donate Money

          3.  Volunteer at the Warehouse

1.  Donating Books to the Library Project

Not accepting books until April, 2008. E-mail us then: kirtbromley@yahoo.com

What kind of books are we looking for?

The Library Project accepts books for every reading level from preschool through college, both paperback and hardback.

We accept all children's books. In every library we set up we try to have a large selection of children's books at every reading level.

We accept books of every subject area including technical and school subjects:

“how to” trade books,     sewing,     cooking,     hobby books,     recent auto mechanics,          French and German and     religious and inspirational books     and all Dewey Decimal categories 100 to 970

We accept all reference works: encyclopedias from 1980 on,     dictionaries,     atlases,

We do not accept US History and Civics books. We accept Fiction books but not romance novels or other fiction/nonfiction that would be too challenging for a non-American reader to understand. No magazines.

Physical Condition: We would expect that the books would be in good physical condition without mildew, broken bindings or missing pages.

Age: Medical and nursing books should be within ten years old.

Encyclopedias and atlases: from 1980 on.

Science books should be 15 years old or less.

Content: We are mindful of the sensibilities of the Ghanaian readers and do not distribute books that overtly evangelize to a particular denomination or religion, or that look down on any particular nation, tribe or group of people. We are also sensitive as to whether the subject matter would be too foreign or strange to a non-American as we mentioned above.

Magazines: We do not accept magazines, not even National Geographic. We prefer to use all of our shipping room for books.

About Shipping.   Our biggest expense is the shipment of the books from Copley, Ohio to Kukurantumi, Ghana. We pay our own airfare over and receive no salary. Please consider making a donation to help us with the shipping cost.

Getting the books to us: After April 1st, 2008

The collection point is our house where we process the books. We evaluate all the book donations we receive. We keep the appropriate books and write the Dewey Decimal number on the spine of the book. The books we cannot use, we send to a recycling center. In the case of elementary school books, we evaluate each and classify each book by reading level. When it comes time to ship the books to Ghana we have a shipping firm back their forty foot trailer right up to our garage and load from it.

You may:

  1. Drop them off at our house: 1518 Sunside Drive, Copley, Ohio 44321

*      This is the easiest and cheapest way.

*      We place the Dewey Decimal number on every book. This is very time consuming, so we appreciate your help by bringing your donations to us.

2. How to Donate Money

Most of our annual budget is spent shipping the books from Copley, Ohio to our warehouse in Kukurantumi, Ghana. We are able to pack 36,000 books in one forty foot shipping container. We personally guide the shipment through the port of Ghana, and then hire a tractor trailer to take the container to the warehouse. All of these expenses are part of the shipping costs. Our budget for 2007-2008 for gathering the books in the USA, shipping them to Ghana and distributing them to the new libraries is $25,000. This includes no salaries except for the staff of the main library/warehouse in Kukurantumi.

Make checks payable to: Books For Africa Library Project    (Donations are tax deductible. We were approved by the IRS as a 501c3 non-profit corporation in 1999 and renewed in 2004. At renewal time we had to prove to the IRS that we were a publicly supported corporation.)

Donations of $25, $35, $50, $100 or more would greatly help with the cost of the shipping and opening of the libraries.

Mail all donations to: Books For Africa Library Project,

                                    P.O. Box 4049,

                                    Copley, OH 44321 USA

3. Volunteer your time

Volunteer at the Warehouse  (Phone:330-666-6816)

1. We receive books every week which need to be catalogued using the Dewey Decimal System. When the number of books get into the thousands on some weeks we get behind and need assistance. You may call to schedule a time working with us or plan on joining us for a “Book Cataloguing Party” on May 26th, June 30th, 2007 from 9am until noon.

2. We will also need assistance transferring the boxes from our garage warehouse to a tractor trailer pulled up into our driveway on the shipping day, October 6th 2007 beginning at 9am. The transfer should take four hours. Call us if you can help.
